Oranje finished the regular season with a 5-1 win over Crossway, while Aldergrove trounced Bethel 9-0 on the other Willoughby field. Langley FC, in the early game, had to forfeit to Vitessa as they didn't have enough players to field a team, and the teams played a friendly instead. Crossway hopes to finish the season with a win next Tuesday in a make-up game against Abbotsford.
Players on both teams had no reason to complain about playing time, (unless it was too much time) as Oranje fielded only 11 players, while Crossway had 12. Both teams played an energetic game, not using lack of players for an excuse to slow down. Oranje dominated in the first half, and would do most of their scoring in that half. Their first goal came off a free kick which Phil Sikma lifted to his teammates waiting in the Crossway area, but a red shirted player tried to clear the ball out, heading it into Crossway's goal instead, for an own goal. Ben Evans tried to equalize when he intercepted an Oranje pass but his drive careened off Tyler VanVliet, just outside the Oranje 18. On the other end, Morris Klos did his Crossway keeper a favour when he blocked a Rick VanderHorst shot. Mark Sikma got Oranje's second marker when he alertly trapped a Crossway clearance and rifled it straight back at Driscoll and in - no chance for the keeper. Oranje's third goal was the result of a nifty pass from Rod VanSpronsen, running wide, to Rick VanderHorst who one-timed his shot off the crossbar. Leroy vanSpronsen was waiting for just such a juicy rebound, and drove it right back on goal and in. Oranje rounded out the first half scoring when Paul Sikma drifted a left-footer from 35 yards, and it soared high, just under the crossbar and in. A convincing 4-0 score at the break.
Crossway generated more chances in the second half, starting early with Jared Mayer shooting just over, and having a later shot redirected away from the Oranje goal by keeper Ryan Sikma. Red was finally rewarded for their effort when Mike Carter squeezed a shot between the post and Sikma to spoil the shutout. Both keepers came up with good saves for their teams after that. Driscoll on Paul Sikma when he headed a pass from his wife Shelley, but Driscoll made the good grab. Driscoll had help too, when Tom Sikma crossed a ball past the sprawling keeper but Trevor Bodill cleared the ball out of the open goal mouth. On the other end, Sikma had to be sharp when Morris Klos got a good feed but Sikma got a quick hand on the shot to keep it out. Claire Wirtz and Julie Tubbs combined on a Red rush but Sikma stopped their effort as well. Mark Sikma tested Driscoll twice on hard drives but the keeper pushed both shots wide. Rick VdHorst had numerous shots around or at the Red goal, but only one that Driscoll had to save. Morris Klos and Mike Carter each had shots on Oranje that Sikma did have to save. Oranje rounded out their scoring just before time ran out when Leroy VanSpronsen's cross found Tom Sikma lurking at the near post and Tom headed it in for goal #5 for Oranje.
Both teams had solid team efforts, but Oranje takes home a resounding win.
