Those were the words spoken by the Valley tailgate gathering after their 5-0 loss to Celtic: "I guess we weren't ready to play". This from a team that beat FC International 2-1 last month: they must have been ready that game!
The game was barely started when Celtic had their first quality chance: Burke VanderHorst running along the top of the Valley circle with a lane opening, but his shot went just wide. Celtic did score some minutes later on what looked to be a set play when Rob VanSeters dealt a free kick from just inside the Valley half to Anthony Togeretz who was just outside the corner of the six yard area. He passed to Chris Vanderhorst, waiting right in front of the keeper and he headed the ball in for his 3rd goal in 2 games. At the 40 minute mark, Keith Wildeboer was at the top of the Valley box, deked out the dark greens and left-footed a shot past keeper Geoff VanLaar. Valley had some rushes in the first half, but none that really tested Russ Toet's keeper abilities.
Celtic had an early chance to open the second half when Glenn Visscher got a good shot on goal but it was kept out with the combined effort of Geoff VanLaar and cousin Dorothy. The resulting corner kick was blown down when Daryl VanDelft was taken down in the Valley box. He took the resulting penalty kick and smoothly struck the ball into the goal for Celtic's 3rd goal. Matt Schouten tried to ignite his Valleyites when he pressured in the Celtic end but he was covered by a Celtic blanket and couldn't get a good shot away. Maurice VanderLinde tried with a header off a corner kick, but no success either when the ball went wide. Mo tried a combo with Kent Ostermeier when Celtic allowed them to squeeze in but the close-in shot went over the bar. Anthony Togeretz got Celtic's 4th goal of the game when a Chris VanderHorst through ball bounced to A-Tog in the middle of the box, and he found the back of the net. Celtic's scoring was capped by Burke VanderHorst when he broke in on a wide, loose ball and pumped a low shot under the Valley keeper for Celtic goal #5. Matt Schouten had two late shots on Toet, one calling for a good save, and the other going wide. And Kent-O had Toet bouncing as much as the ball was, when his shot deflected, Toet needing to scramble first one way, then the other but the ball stayed out.
Valley has one more game to play, a makeup game against Langley FC, a game early in the season which was called due to darkness. Both teams will want to head into the playoffs with a win fresh under their belts. Celtic has 2 wins in a row, and are ready to 'rock-em, sock-em!
